Haptic Lab

haptic central park quilt

I’ve been in love with Haptic Lab from the moment I first saw a beautiful Soft-Map of Brooklyn, my former home. Brooklyn is also the home of Haptic Lab, founded by Emily Fischer, a Brooklyn-based architect and designer. She began making the Soft-Maps in 2002, inspired by the quilts of her mother who was also loosing her eyesight at the time, as an “academic experiment in tactile wayfinding”. Haptic refers to “the sense of touch that includes the entire body, inside and out; it is also the mechanism we employ to situate our bodies in space, feeling the world around us.” Haptic is tactile, inspiring the senses, as do these gorgeous Soft-Maps.

haptic baby quiltCurrently available as readymade Baby Quilts ($145.00) in several designs, featuring maps from places that also inspire the senses, the imagination and dreams, perfect to inspire your baby or yourself. The baby quilts are great to decorate your child’s room or as a perfect playmat that offers so much more than just a soft spot to play.  These are produced locally using a novel combination of machine and hand-stitching methods. It’s the Custom Soft-Maps that will really capture your attention. These can be created in cotton and silk with your choice of scale, size or location: zoom in on a spot you want to remember or pull out to cover a country you dream about. The world is at your disposal. Each Custom Soft-Map is quilted and embroidered by hand in Brooklyn, can take over 200 hours to create and is a true work of art. These are a beautiful way to commemorate a special location in your life and display it in a way that you can experience and appreciate each day.
