We have had a long history of alphabet books in our house, with favorites being Halloween ABC and more recently the Dinosaurs From A To Z book that ties into the PBS series Dinosaur Train. But Kate Endle and Caspar Babypants have come up with a new twist on it with their book Augie to Zebra (and accompanying downloadable song of the text). In Augie to Zebra, Endle and Babypants have taken each letter of the alphabet and created an alliterative sentence for it, incorporating a child’s name, an activity and an animal, for example “Darla draws Dogs” or my favorite “Josie jams with the jaguars.” This playful language is almost surreal and creates usual associations, making for a memorable fun time with the alphabet that goes beyond the usual dross of “A is for apple.” Coupled with the refreshing text are Endle’s illustrations of exquisite collage art, combining great patterns and colors, which lend great vibrancy to the text. Additionally the book comes with a code to download an mp3 of a song of the text sung by Caspar Babypants so that kids can sing along while looking at the book to make a truly special occasion out of their alphabet experience.
