MCMC Fragrances is a superb boutique brand of fragrances based in Brooklyn, Greenpoint to be exact. Each of their incredibly beautiful scents is prepared in small batches and bottled by hand in the Brooklyn studio. Anne McClain, MCMC's creator, aims to capture those special moments, memories and people of her life, creating unique and personal scents that will transform and inspire you. The ingredients are the finest and feature such special notes as organic Bourbon vanilla, Bulgarian rose absolute, wild Somalian myrhh, French seaweed absolute, Tunisian neroli and Kambodi Oud. There are few fragrances in my life that have stopped me dead in my tracks and made me not want to be without them, that have compelled me to want more immediately. I can name only 4 or 5 at most that have transfixed me the way that my first sniff of MCMC's Phoenix recently did. It is strongly compelling, uniquely beautiful and it immediately sent me on a search to find out more about MCMC.
My very favorite perfume, an oil blend from Italy, was discontinued so very long ago and nothing since has captured my heart the way it did until I found MCMC. In fact I've gone fairly scentless ever since, but now I have found the perfect place to start again. MCMC presents the sort of unique and unusual olfactory compositions that are haltingly beautiful and destined for long term love affairs. Trained in Grasse, the very center of the perfume world, Anne McClain brings her unique sensory talents and vivid personal inspirations together in each scent and it is fabulous. Blending a beautiful fragrance that inspires, captures and never overwhelms is an art and Anne McClain is a artist. These are not scents that will overpower you, but transport you. And you will love it.
Even better, MCMC creates several special editions that give back, something I always love. The Humanity Fragrance Special Edition, gives a portion of its proceeds to the Working For Children Rainbow Orphanage in rural Cambodia. It offers 2 scents, available through Anthropologie bottled in the very pretty MCMC bottles or the extra special edition in those lovely anatomical heart inspired bottles (by Lance McGregor and Alan Iwamura, and handmade at Brooklyn Glass) seen at right. The Humanity Fragrance Project is both inspired by and meant to inspire compassion and involves a volunteer trip to visit the subject organization before the edition is created. Another lovely benefit fragrance is Garden, giving a portion of its proceeds to Ananda Harvest in upstate New York.
Whether shopping for your own new signature fragrance or looking for a truly unique, inspiring and uplifting gift, visit MCMC and you are bound to find exactly what you're looking for. Not sure what to choose? Eau de parfum samples are available for the 7 main scents in a generous 1.5 ml for $5. And I have to say that the Dude No. 1 Beard oil sounds pretty appealing too, dude or not.
