Recess Monkey's latest album Deep Sea Diver is an ocean-sized portion of fun, filled with imaginative, playful and at times straight out rocking songs. Full of great melodies, starting with the first song "Tambourine Submarine", Deep Sea Diver continues Recess Monkey's run of creating music that kids will love and parents will be pleased to let play over and and over (and might even love themselves). One of the most interesting things about Recess Monkey is their musical versatility: within the first four songs you have an indie rock number, a Bo Diddley style rumbler, a King Sunny Ade (Ju Ju music) style song and a Knackish rocker about beach balls. And this variation among styles keeps the underlying theme of the album from getting stale as each song's sound is something new, something unexpected. Equally impressive is Recess Monkey's ability to write songs that have kids' perspective firmly in place without feeling contrived or inauthentic, and playfully tackle things that kids are concerned with such as being the small guy or keeping up with older kids or when your best friend has to move away. Deep Sea Diver should certainly cement Recess Monkey's place as one of the most versatile and entertaining kids' music bands around today.
