The Doctor, Part 34

Without them
I’m quite blind,
squinting at my street sign
like one of those
delicate
Europeans or Asians on a tour of
artisanal Brooklyn,

chemo gives me headaches
sometimes
when I wear
my glasses,

so
sometimes
I take them off
so not
to hurt my head,
so not
to see
the minutiae
in
the mirror,

I take them off
so I can’t see
how bad it is,

I can pretend
I’m in a
dream or drugged fog

and when I go outside
I see
so poorly
it’s a form of
anti-x-ray specs
backwards mask
everyone
blurred voices
and invisible features
as I hope they
see me.
